Between his girlfriend and his partner having to give him pep talks at the beginning of the episode and his more menacing threat to Sam and Bucky, it’s not too far crazy to think Walker could lose his mind and go full Homelander before all is said and done. ![]() In his so-far brief appearance, the Wyatt Russell version of Walker nails the jerkish nature of his comic book roots, while hinting at something darker. Let’s unpack the comic book origins of each of the Captains and examine how the show interacts with the storied history of those characters. In other words, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier might as well be called Captains America instead. And the most recent episode also introduces us to Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), whose tragic backstory represents a grim, racially charged take on the Captain America ethos. For John Walker (Wyatt Russell), who the government installs as the new Captain America, it’s about trying to do right with a role forced upon him. For Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who’s working through the trauma of becoming a mind-controlled assassin in the form of the Winter Soldier, it’s about trying to find his true self. Essentially, showrunner Malcolm Spellman ( Empire) is exploring what the Cap mantle means for the identity of a handful of MCU men, both new and old.įor Sam Wilson, aka the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), who decided to reject Steve Roger’s parting wish for him to become the next Captain America, it’s about what it means for a Black man to potentially become a symbol of America. That means the MCU's new Captain America can take a hit, even if he's thrown his shield. We’re only two episodes into Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier-the next Marvel Cinematic Universe/Disney+ series after * WandaVision-and it’s already focused on big ideas. In Falcon & Winter Soldier episode 1, Sam used these wings as a shield he proves able to do the same with these new wings in episode 6, but they seem far more durable, probably made of Vibranium. That was a wise choice, because Sam's wings are both impressive and imposing, giving him such a distinctive profile in the MCU. Captain America: The Winter Soldier rightly abandoned the underarm wings of the comics while Falcon & Winter Soldier could technically have brought them back courtesy of Wakanda, the designers chose to avoid doing so. ![]() The wings are the big difference between Sam's comic book costume and his MCU look. The belt buckle has been streamlined a little, so it doesn't dominate the costume in the same way as in the comics, instead ensuring your eye is drawn to the symbol on Sam's chest. It's likely they also incorporate some controls for Redwing and the other drones he's been given by the Wakandans. The new Captain America's goggles are the same, although they have additional sensor capacity in the MCU where the comics just treated them as eye protectors his gloves have been turned into gauntlets, presumably to help Sam catch a heavy shield that's flying toward him at speed. The color scheme, the pattern of the piping, even the style of the logo is incredibly accurate it's simplified a little over the chest, but rightly so because the patterns around the star were a little too complex in the comics. ![]() This time round, though, the design is lifted straight from the comics. Marvel Studios may be a lot more willing to do comic-book-accurate costumes than Fox (whose first X-Men film back in 2000 quietly mocked superhero fans for wanting blue spandex), but even Marvel didn't feel the world was ready for a comic accurate Falcon. Sam Wilson's MCU costume shows just how far the superhero genre has come. ![]() Related: All 14 Marvel TV Shows Releasing After Falcon & Winter Soldier Enemies who thought they could take on Steve Rogers or John Walker will find Sam Wilson very difficult indeed to handle. Meanwhile, Sam's fighting style doesn't just incorporate athleticism and shield-swinging he's an airborne superhero, and often he uses his rocket-thrusters to perform impressive gymnastic feats. In his view, doing so would dishonor all those who fought before him, including Isaiah Bradley - the forgotten super-soldier who Sam has brought to the public eye through a new part of the Captain America exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution. He's well aware that there are millions of people who want the first Black Captain America to fail, but he's not going to stop fighting. Sam will be a different kind of Captain America, though.
